Bicycle Friendly Award Winners 2007

The Bicycle Friendly Awards were presented to ten deserving organizations at Regional Council on October 18, 2007. This program, sponsored by the Regional Niagara Bicycling Committee and Niagara Region Public Health, was established to recognize organizations that promote and support cycling in the Niagara region as cycling contributes to improved individual health and our environment.

 Awards are presented in a series of categories, including, workplace, business, community groups, and government institutions.  Award recipients comprise organizations from Welland, St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Niagara Falls.

 The recipients of the Bicycle Friendly Award 2007 were:

 Workplaces

Name: Ontario Power Generation Niagara Plant Group    Awarded: Gold

Ontario Power Generation Niagara Plant Group is commended for incorporating cycling into the course of the work day by promoting the use of bicycles for transportation around the plant.

Name:  GDX Automotive   Awarded: Silver

GDX Automotive is commended for their active living policy which includes a statement about promoting active commuting to work.

Name: Community Living Welland Pelham   Awarded: Silver

Community Living Welland Pelham  is particularly noted for  their positive and supportive work environment. This year they entered two teams in the ‘Bike to get there…’ campaign. Quoted from their application, ”An award is always nice and we would love to receive one, but having more and more people using the trails for biking… makes us all winners.”

Name: Niagara Region Corporate Wellness Committee  Awarded Silver

The Corporate Wellness Committee is particularly noted for their physical activity policy and encouragement of active transportation.

Name: City of Welland   Awarded: Bronze

The City of Welland is most noted for the daily cycling events they hosted for their employees during launch week of the campaign, Bike to get there where you live, learn, work and play.

 

Business

             Name: Bikefit    Award: Gold

Bikefit is most noted for their ongoing five year support of RNBC cycling initiatives by donating prizes as well as sponsoring the Sunflower Squad, a women’s only cycling group.


           Name: Liberty! Bicycles          
Awarded: Gold

Liberty! Bicycles is most noted for their ongoing five year support of RNBC cycling initiatives by donating prizes as well as hosting several key cycling events in Niagara.

 

Community Groups

          Name: Sunflower Squad Awarded: Gold

The Sunflower Squad is noted for being leaders in the work that they do in engaging girls from age 10 to 15 in cycling. Research indicates that physical activity rates drop off most dramatically in adolescent girls, yet their retention rate is higher than 90%.

 

Government Institution

             Name: Niagara Region Public Health, School Health Program

 – Elementary Team Awarded: Bronze

The School Health Program is particularly noted for actively promoting the Bike to get there campaign in their schools and reaching approximately 1000 students by participating in the distribution of  the Bike to get there… where you live, learn, work and play passports.

 Name: Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake   Awarded:  Bronze

The Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake is commended for their new zoning provisions requiring bicycle facilities in new developments which serve as a model for other municipalities currently preparing new comprehensive planning documents.
