What exactly is the RNBC? Perhaps you have heard of the RNBC but are not sure who they are or what they do. Between this and future columns, I hope to answer most of those questions. The Regional Niagara Bicycling Committee is a group of selected volunteers, members of Regional Council and Regional Niagara staff committed to addressing bicycling issues in the Region. In response to the recommendations of the Bicycling Study carried out in the early 1990’s, the RNBC was created by Regional Council in 1995 to: Provide input on cycling issues, projects, policies and programs on an ongoing basis, Examine opportunities for cycling along abandoned railway right-of-ways, utility corridors, waterways and other linear corridors, Monitor the implementation of the Regional Niagara Bicycling Network and support programs, Participate as volunteers in bicycling initiatives and programs, and Prepare a report to Council at the end of each 3 year term of the RNBC summarizing their work, plans and concerns to focus on the progress of bicycling in the Region. Much of the work is accomplished through a series of Task Force subcommittees. Presently the active Task Forces are Engineering, Education & Enforcement and Encouragement . The complete Terms of Reference and a brief history of the RNBC are available on the website: http://www.cycleniagara.com/RNBC/index.html There are a couple of things you as a Freewheeler can do to further cycling initiatives in Niagara: Maintain a riding log. The Freewheelers are a valuable source of cycling statistics when there is a need to justify road improvements based on ridership; Report accidents to the Police, especially those involving a motor vehicle or personal injury. Hopefully they never occur because you have received some on road training and you follow the rules of the road, but after all, they are accidents. Next time, more information on Task Force activities. Bob Romanuk |
