RNBC Taskforces

Last issue introduced the work of the Regional Niagara Bicycling Committee and mentioned that most of the work is accomplished through the subcommittees. Here are some examples of those achievements.

The RNBC logo was the first project taken on by the Encouragement Taskforce. In the early months of the RNBC a contest was organized with submissions from the public and a few elementary school art classes. The (hopefully) familiar stylized chainring and chain was the result. Further efforts of this group include creation of the Cycle Niagara map booklet and Offroad Trails brochure (with much help from the Freewheelers). Organizing volunteers for the Toronto Bike Show and the Bike to Work brochure are other projects. By next year there should be a new Niagara map product available.

The Education Taskforce has been extremely hard working in reaching as many school age kids as possible. From assisting with the In School Bicycle Program in the mid 1990’s to numerous bike rodeos and cycling safety clinics, volunteers of the Taskforce have donated countless hours. Their work lives on in the brochures created including Sidewalk Cycling, Risky Business and Cycling at Night.

The work also never stops for the Engineering Taskforce. Initially the early goal was to establish a consistent and appropriate set of design standards which the Public Works Department could utilize for road reconstruction. Niagara is unfortunately unique in that one solution is not applicable to the variety of situations encountered. The efforts needed for ongoing review of the road reconstruction schedule alone are substantial. Some of the work you may have encountered are Lakeport Road into Port Dalhousie and the sections of Glenridge and Glendale which have been marked with cycling facilities.

Are you still keeping that cycling log? Mentioned last time, having the Freewheelers cycling data to present to our political leaders is the single best way for individuals to make a difference. Also check the newspapers for announcements of Public Meetings with respect to road reconstruction. It is a couple of hours out of an evening, but enough voices and written comments can make a difference here too. If you really have a lot of energy, consider joining one of the Taskforces. Members of the public are always welcome. (Brochures and publications mentioned here are available on the RNBC website: www.cycleniagara.com/RNBC/index.html )
